Join H.E. Dzogchen Khenpo Choga Rinpoche and the International Dzogchen Buddha Path Sangha as we learn about and celebrate this great enlightened master! Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa (1730–1798), also known as Khyentse Özer, “Rays of Wisdom and Compassion,” is revered as one of the most important figures in the Nyingma tradition and as one of the greatest treasure revealers in the history of Tibetan Buddhism. He entered monastic life as a young boy, and in the long solitary retreats of his youth, at Palri Monastery and in the caves of Samye Chimphu, his boundless devotion to Guru Rinpoche ripened into profound realization of the nature of mind.
At the age of twenty-eight, in a vision of the Great Stupa of Boudhanath, the wisdom dakinis entrusted him with a casket of yellow scrolls, and the entire Longchen Nyingtik, the Heart Essence of the Vast Expanse, awakened in his mind. During a later retreat at Chimphu, three successive pure visions of the omniscient Longchenpa inspired him to set these teachings down and share them with his disciples. As Jigme Lingpa himself wrote in his Verse Autobiography, “I met Longchenpa in a vision and realized the truth of reality.”
In particular, Jigme Lingpa’s contribution to the Dzogchen Buddha Path Lineage of learning, contemplation and meditation is vast, since the Longchen Nyingtik, with its extraordinary preliminary practices, sadhanas, and Dzogchen instructions such as the Yeshe Lama, remains one of the most widely practiced cycles of teachings in the world today. Furthermore, his great work, The Treasury of Precious Qualities (Yönten Dzö), illuminates the complete and unmistaken path of sutra and tantra for the practitioner, and with the patronage of the Derge royal family, he gathered and published the Collected Tantras of the Nyingma so that they would flourish for generations to come. It is precisely through following Jigme Lingpa’s teachings that one can attain the result of Buddha within one lifetime. Through his heart disciples, the Four Jigmes, and through his emanations, Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, Patrul Rinpoche and Do Khyentse, countless practitioners have achieved many sublime accomplishments through his lineage blessings. Thus, we wholeheartedly honor and celebrate Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa!
